“…By 1991 ab Death Metal had infiltrated the masses. Especially Florida- the scene at that time was alive with so many great Metal bands that the world could no longer ignore that Death Metal was here permanently.
The winter of 1992, EQUINOX emerged as the catalyst for a new genre within the scene: Black / Death Metal. With influences ranging from CELTIC FROST and POSSESSED to NECROVORE and early MAYHEM, SAMAEL, EQUINOX developed a style that spawned a legion of loyal fans. It was immediately apparent that this band would have a lasting impact on the world of underground Death/Black Metal for decades to come.
The band was formed by Pete Slate (ex- ACHERON) and Steve Spillers. The two musicians had seen each other at various gigs throughout Florida at the time and discovered they had common bonds through bands like BATHORY, DREAM DEATH, and VENOM. The original line up for EQUINOX included Pete Slate (guitars), Mark Lavenia (bass), Steve Spillers (drums) and Matt Wagner (vocals).
The first EQUINOX 1993 Demo, “Anthem to the Moon” was recorded at a small studio in Orlando, Florida, and included 3 classic EQUINOX tracks (some of which would later be re-recorded and released on their debut full length debut "Return to Mystery").
In 1994, EQUINOX released a “Promotional Demo” which also featured early recordings of songs that would eventually lead to a record deal with Unisound Records (Greece). The 1994 promo also saw the exit of Mark Lavenia and the addition of Tony Blakk (ex-ACHERON) on rhythm guitars. The search for a new bassist went no further than existing EQUINOX vocalist Matt "Darkness" Wagner. Prior to his joining EQUINOX, Matt had also performed guitar duties for his previous bands and immediately assumed the role of bassist for the band. With Matt pulling double duty on bass and vocals plus the fortuitous addition of Tony Blakk on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, EQUINOX entered the era in which they would produce the cult classic "Upon the Throne" of Eternity" 7"EP and cement their place in Death Metal history for several years yet to come. This release was predecessor to the debut album "Return To Mystery."
After approaching various labels with the "Promotional Demo" 1994 EQUINOX landed a deal with Greece’s Unisound Records bands (a label that released great underground cult such as VARATHRON, ROTTING CHRIST, NECROMANTIA, THOU ART LORD, etc.) such over the summer of 1995 for the release of their debut full length, “Return to Mystery”. Fortunately the band was currently working with renowned sound engineer Greg Mandigo for their live performances and he agreed to handle the recording duties for the raw tracks which were laid down at Shock Lizard Studios in Orlando, Florida. Once the raw tracks were complete EQUINOX entered Morrisound Studios in early ’96 to do the mixing and mastering with Tom Morris at the helm. Both Greg and Tom shared the band’s vision of producing an album that didn’t adhere to the common mold of the current Death Metal scene. With tracks speaking of mythology and mysticism the band endured grueling 18 hours recording sessions that resulted in one of the most uniquely heavy releases the Death Metal scene has ever witnessed. EQUINOX didn't stop the invasion there. The band entered Morrisound Studios for the second full length "Journey Into Oblivion" for Still Dead Productions (Poland). Engineered by Tom and Jim Morris the album didn't see the light of day until 2003 due to financial strains with the label. Through the years the band had personal changes but did release "The Immortal Kind" CD in 2006 and "As the Moon Swallows the Sun" compilation in 2008.
Proselytism Records is set to re-release both albums plus their earlier recordings in a dark night of 2015 for all the die-hard EQUINOX fans and of course the new ones!!! This re-release will truly be a return to mystery!... A Plague Of Infernal Darkness...”
